San Jose, CA Area Guide

The city is located roughly 50 miles south of San Francisco and is the largest city in the Bay Area. As of 2008, San José’s approximate population was 1,007,000. History


The San Jose area was first inhabited by several groups of Ohlone Native Americans. The first lasting European presence began with a series of Franciscan missions established from 1769 by Father Junípero Serra. The town was the first civil settlement in Alta California.
California became part of the United States in 1846 and soon afterwards, on March 27, 1850, San Jose became the second incorporated city in the state. The town was the state's first capital.

As World War II started, the city's economy shifted from agriculture to industrial manufacturing with the contracting of the Food Machinery Corporation by the United States War Department to build 1000 Landing Vehicle Tracked. After World War II, FMC continued as a defense contractor. IBM established its West Coast headquarters in San Jose in 1943.

Happy Hollow Park and Zoo

Happy Hollow Park and Zoo in San Jose opened in 1961. It features a unique combination of children’s rides, amusements, a Puppet Theater, play areas and an accredited Zoo with animals ranging from endangered lemurs to miniature horses.

Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum

This museum houses the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts on exhibit in the western North America, including objects from pre dynastic times through Egypt's early Islamic era.

The San Jose Giants are a Minor League professional baseball team. The team has been affiliated with the San Francisco Giants since 1988. The San Jose Giants are the 2009 California League Champions and have called San Jose our home for the past 60 years. The Giants afford thousands of San Jose residents the opportunity to bring their families to watch our national pastime at a fraction of the cost of a major league game.
